Re-watching it was good, but I don't think I would have put this one in the Best Picture run-off for 1964. I still liked the cinematography and Anthony Quinn's earthy passionate performance (has any actor fit into so many different nationality roles with the ease of Quinn?) I got a chance to meet him in 1978 and he is indeed a larger-than-life character.

Back to the movie, I agree with you Matt that tonally it is all over the place. I felt that after the deaths of their love interests and the catastrophe of the timber transport system, the dancing ending was a bit hard to swallow. Love the music, though.Mike Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14953461679716236054noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5569750317755310322.post-531773890945837592010-01-18T08:44:46.200+11:002010-01-18T08:44:46.200+11:00I have mixed feelings on this movie. On the one hand, it's a fascinating and gripping story and the acting is top-notch, but the way the female characters are treated in the end is disgusting (and I don't mean the way the villagers acted but the way the movie makers presented it).
I never understand why people call this a "feel-good"-movie.Fritzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03291268052797806635noreply@blogger.com
