Those were the two categories I'd made a decision on early and then just couldn't bring myself to change them, despite the nagging feeling I was wrong. Oh well. My two alternate picks from yours would be Belfast for Original Screenplay and CODA for Picture. Of the seven nominees I have seen, I would go for The Power of the Dog. Enjoy the Awards Ceremony. I took the time during COVID to watch all of the nominees for Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Supportings, Director, and Editing. I’m down to just four films. Three are believed to have been lost (The Patriot, The Way of All Flesh, and Wonder of Women), and the last one is The White Parade. UCLA isn’t accepting visitors during COVIDtide, but hopefully they will again sometime soon.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for the info you provided; it was so helpful!

Take care!Jillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01014319801136368586noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5569750317755310322.post-49517435039126758752021-11-23T06:03:19.788+11:002021-11-23T06:03:19.788+11:00Hello mate niice blogHello mate niice blogMelaniehttps://www.melrivera.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5569750317755310322.post-24251297272886076812021-11-09T06:55:29.961+11:002021-11-09T06:55:29.961+11:00Hi Sidlah! I've only seen four of the eight Best Picture nominees, and those I saw were from home. For what it's worth I agree with all your major category choices. I also agree that Best Actress is the toughest one to pick. As much as I love Viola Davis's work, and I think she just may win this year, I'd have to go with Carey Mulligan. That's pretty good for me. Normally, I do well with the major categories but fall apart in the technical categories, or vice versa. But I managed to be pretty consistent across the board this time, including getting 100% on 9 different categories, which I'm pretty sure is a record for me.

Yeah, I was pretty shocked that Once and 1917 missed out on Editing noms. Definitely makes for an interesting race for Best Picture. It's interesting to note, though, that the only film since 1981 that won Best Picture without an Editing nom was Birdman, which was a film designed to look like it was filmed in one shot, just like 1917. So I'm still learning towards it taking the top prize. The guild winners over the next few weeks will hopefully make things clearer.Matt Fosterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10317583098531787395noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5569750317755310322.post-33565997850736224332020-01-14T08:20:17.036+11:002020-01-14T08:20:17.036+11:00I don't know your final tally, but it looks li...I don't know your final tally, but it looks like you knocked it out of the park. Congratulations, Matt. You were spot on having four films with double digit nominations. Not only is that a first for the academy, but only twice has three films received double digit nominations - 1964 and 1977.
As for me, other than the Best Picture nominations, which were pretty straightforward, I didn't do too well. I thought this would be a breakout year for Asian performers, but my three nominees didn't make it. Your pick of Kathy Bates was a good one. Someone posted that if you saw Richard Jewell, which I haven't, you'd have no trouble picking her.

On to the Awards. I'm not sure if the 'must have' nominations are all that critical anymore to win Best Picture, but I noted that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood did not receive an Editing nomination. Neither did 1917 as well as no acting nods. Yet, those two films feel like front runners to me. I haven't seen a few of the contenders yet. I'll just post my differences with your picks in the top 6 categories.
Best Picture: swap Little Women with Ford vs. Ferrari in case there are only 8 nominees, and replace Richard Jewell with Knives out for the tenth slot.

Best Director: I'll go with Greta Gerwig over Todd Phillips.

Best Actor: I'll substitute Antonio Banderas for Christian Bale. Bale has had a remarkable decade with four nominations. This would make five. Banderas is still looking for his first.

Best Actress: I'll take Awkwafina instead of Erivo, even though I've seen neither film yet.

Best Supporting Actor: Instead of Anthony Hopkins I'll pick Song Kang Ho from Parasite, which I think will do very well tomorrow.

Best Supporting Actress. Where I usually mess up. I'll differ with your choices twice: Zhao Shuzen and Florence Pugh instead of Kathy Bates and Scarlett Johannson. I'm betting that a double nomination is a tough hurdle for S.J.

I'll be back after your winner predictions.
MikeMike Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14953461679716236054noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5569750317755310322.post-79380827464536639472019-04-13T15:16:01.563+10:002019-04-13T15:16:01.563+10:00I distinctly recall seeing a film version of Fanny...I distinctly recall seeing a film version of Fanny WITH songs. Looking forward to her playing The Queen in the next season of The Crown.

It seams that nearly every BP nominee is missing one or more of the important precursors or AA nominations in a critical category. That's what makes this year more challenging. I think this decade has demonstrated that you can win without having all of them.

I'll never understand what makes the experts in the various Academy branches pick or don't pick certain front-runners. Roma doesn't get an Editing nomination, but gets nominated for both Sound Mixing and Sound Editing. BlackkKlansman I believe has more of the essential nominations than any other BP nominee, but hasn't really won anything. While The Favourite and Roma have tied for the most nominations - 10, one of Roma's 10 was for Foreign language Film, for which The Favourite could not compete. So I give The Favourite the edge there.Michael J Kellynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5569750317755310322.post-71584129455803092562019-01-26T04:56:46.808+11:002019-01-26T04:56:46.808+11:00Hey Mike!
Yeah, definitely a few more surprises t...Hey Mike!

Yeah, definitely a few more surprises this year than normal, particularly Best Director. And that fifth slot in each of the acting categories was hard to peg. We missed on all counts.

Like last year, the Best Picture race is open to a few contenders at this point. Like you, I suspect Cuaron is the favorite for Director, which makes me lean towards Roma for Best Picture, but that lack of an Editing nom is odd. Could be a Green Book/Cuaron split for Pic/Director. Or maybe even The Favourite/Cuaron.

Bale and Ali seem like the frontrunners in their acting categories, which could be confirmed on Sunday night at the SAG Awards (though, I voted for Cooper and Grant).

I'm leaning towards King winning for Supp. Actress at the moment, but only just. I wouldn't be surprised if Adams or Weisz pulled it off, particularly since King isn't nominated for the SAG Award, so if Adams or Weisz win there, that will boost their chances (I voted for Weisz).

And Actress is tight, I think. I'm having a tough time separating three of the contenders. Maybe Close has a slight edge, but Colman is close behind, and Gaga is close behind that. Again, SAG may help one of them push to the front (I voted for Colman).

Whatever happens, it's going to be another exciting year!
